When weakened by overcharging, shock, manufacturing defect or thermal stress, these batteries can produce thermal runaway, leading to fire or explosion.  Lithium-ion battery fires are particularly dangerous and difficult to control because of the heat retention that takes place inside a battery, sometimes over several hours.

Composed of Potassium polyacrylate, Montmorillonite and Quartz, the gel sprayed by Fireblock extinguishers creates a thick layer that covers the glowing battery, reducing thermal runaway in a few of seconds and preventing them from burning.

Unlike the use of water, which only slows down the fire and takes longer to cool, the gel developed by Fireblock stops immediately and permanently all burning by quickly reducing the heat of the fire.
